Track Of The Day :: Zola Blood - Play Out
Words: Alison Mack
We last heard from Hackney's Zola Blood last autumn with the release of their debut EP 'Meridian' (see review here), and if seems from new single 'Play Out' the four-piece have not lost their edge on dark synthpop.
Released on September 4 on Pond Life Songs, and produced by Richard Formby (Wild Beasts, Ghostpoet, Darkstar), the track opens on a pounding percussive rhythm before Matt West pours over a lushly enticing vocal along with vocal samples and arpeggios - and not least a bank of vintage synthesizers that were incorporated (“We wanted every sound on the tracks to be totally unique – we even put the drums through a modular synth”), that are woven in and around building layers of synth, flowing out to a ghostlike electronic end section.
There's still something rather coldly detached about Zola Blood, but in that essence may also be their USP.
