Sounding like some world-weary American Mid-Westerners, or habitees of the wide-open Canadian plains, it is a surprise to hear that Novah are in fact Swedish.
With a warmth and melody far removed from much of that we hear from the dark Nordic countries, 'Robot' feels more akin to what might be associated with the likes of Bon Iver. It is the second piece from the band, following single 'When The Storm Arrived' (which came out back in June on independent Swedish label Icons Creating Evil Art), and their debut in September 2014, 'Cold (The Minute We Found Love)'.
Written over Skype with "the lyrics and melodies completed in about an hour", 'Robot' was recorded last year at Greve Studios in Berlin (where band member Simon Hagström Rennerstedt was living at the time) a few days later by the Stockholm-based quintet.
From the haunting opening acoustic strummed guitar notes, David Tranberg's vocal delivery is as smoky and compelling as you could wish on this emotive, slow tempo track. The rise to the all-out ending, with vocal layered effects, and the final seconds of what sounds like a train on a track, is beautifully arranged.
