September 11 2015 - Hot Top Ten
THE MURLOCS - ROLLING ON
Australian psychster five-piece from Geelong, with new single, to appear on their second studio album, out early next year via Flightless/Remote Control Records. Ambrose Kenny-Smith gives full helium-esque vocal attention to the rock-blues refrain.
SISTER GRACIE - FIRES
They may not be sisters, or called Gracie, but Londoners, the baritone vocalled Max Walker and James Latto (electronic drums and production), turn out a fine electro on this lead track from their 'Animal' EP, both released last week. Catch them at The Islington, London on September 18.
GRACES - SLOW
From one Grace to another, still not a Grace - ex-Over and Out member Steve Harrison this time - and unrelated to the Gracies above, though all now ensconced in London. Now solo, this is the first taster from his debut EP, out November 13.
KISSES - THE NILE
Even if disco funk is not exactly the kind of sound that fucks with your mindset, it's hard not to feel like you wanna boogie on down with this latest single lifted from the LA duo's 'Rest in Paradise' LP, out October 9 via Hit City USA.
MORE - I NEED YOU
Danish lo-fi single (that reminds us of 70s John Lennon) released last week from Copenhagen's alt-pop duo. Melodic piano and synths, sparse vocals a reflective, downtempo feel.
SWERVE - AW HELL
Not the UK/Birmingham outfit, but the US/LA rock variant (Gregory Mahdesian, drummer Casey Baird, guitarist Ryan Berti, and bassist Brandon Duncan), formed early this year. The REM/Britpop-ish track comes from their debut EP, due soon.
WINTERS END - MAYFAIR
Rumbling drums give this new single by electronic indie sibling duo Chris (drums) and Marissa (vocals, synth, guitar/bass) Pinto from Sydney's eastern Surry Hills 'burbs, an ominous air. Think: a tribal London Grammar.
MEMORY FLOWERS - CARTWHEELS
Moody, wistful guitar pop from one man north-west London powerhouse, Andrew Pisanu. The song - about falling in love, and which comes from his second album, out next January - fits a vocal lament with orchestral instrumentation to give an emotive pop spin.
GREYS - I'D HATE TO BE AN ACTOR
Shehzaad Jiwani ponders the impenetrable questions on the Toronto outfit's guitar stacked, drum heavy first single from upcoming EP 'Repulsion', released October 30 via Carpark and Buzz Records - the follow-up to their acclaimed 2014 debut album 'If Anything'.
MOANA - ELEPHANT BONES
Led by Moana Lutton, the Perth, Australia psych-rock-blues contingent air a tribal rock taster with this single cut from their upcoming EP 'The Trilogy Of The Black Monsoon', dropping September 18.
