Track Of The Day :: Wise Child - Tomoko
Words: Linn Branson
Brother and sister Tom and Jem King - Wise Child - released 'Tomoko', their first single proper after an earlier demo, last month. It may have slipped past many as the Melbourne-based pair are still largely unknown to us on the other side of the globe; though on listening to its lustrous quality, you feel that could (and should) all change.
Talking about how ‘Tomoko’ arose, Jem says: "I guess it’s about following your intuitions and not being afraid to dive head first into something in case it fails. I remember at the time we had both been listening to a lot of Bonobo and Nick Cave. The samples at the start of the song are Tom singing some notes stacked on top of each other that I trigger. We also made the looping synth line that runs through the entire song.”
'Tomoko' bewitchingly fuses Jem's dulcet lead vocal in a dark soundscape of skittering electronics and scattered dual harmonising; the looped synth Jem mentions above, keeping it all afloat. Intriguing and captivating.
