New Sounds #31 14/2/16

LANKS - GOLDEN AGE
New single from Melbourne producer and multi-instrumentalist Will Cuming, co-produced with Grammy-nominated Andrei Eremin (Hiatus Kaiyote, Ta-Ku), and is now available as a free download. This new ambitious and addictive work of pulsating bass and shiver-me-spine vocals follows last year's second EP 'Banquet'. Star rating: ****.5/5

CATHOLIC ACTION - L.U.V
Out March 18 via Luv Luv Luv Records, the catchy, bouncy, debut single from the Glasgow glam rock four-piece. Formed by 24-year-old vocalist and guitarist Chris McCrory (drummer with Casual Sex). Jangle pop T Rex/The Sweet mash-up. Star rating: ****/5

COHLAJ - LIAR LIAR
Synthpop debut single released last month from Sydney indietronica trio, and taken from their new EP 'Audiomeal'. The trio - we're not sure about name pronunciation, but try Cohlaj as in 'collage' - are governed by Javier Torres' swampy beats and samples and Alicia Quinn's velvet vocals and sublime layering towards end. Star rating: ****/5

SALT CATHEDRAL - NO ORDINARY MAN
We first featured this New York-based outfit in November 2014 after releasing their 'Oom Velt' EP. This new single from Nicolas Losada and Juliana Ronderos comes in advance of their full-length debut. Subtle textured soul-influenced electronica ballad. Star rating: ***.5/5

THE VACANT SMILES - DRENCHED
From new album 'You’re Not Really Here' by the Melbourne quartet. Surf-rock/blues evocation with a side helping of post-punk, and a dreamy breakdown section where vocalist/ guitarist James Lynch admits, “I always feel like a mess/I always feel confused/when everyone pretends to make sense“. Definitely one that grows. Star rating: ****/5
