New Sounds #43 - April 7 2016

MOWBECK - RUNAWAY
Opening on some nice riffy, soaring guitar, the Nottingham grit-pop quartet share a taster from forthcoming 'Talkabout' EP (due for release in June). Catch them live at O2 Academy, Sheffield on April 21. Star rating: ***/5

PASSPORT TO STOCKHOLM - BETTER DAYS
London-based indie/folk-pop outfit's new single, from their upcoming EP of the same name, out April 29. Vibrant violin-infused, alt-folk instrumentation and strong vocals from Chris Barnard. Catch live at London's Boston Music Room on April 15. Star rating: ***.5/5

FROM APES TO ANGELS - ONE FOR ME
Follow-up to 'Perfection', out May 9 by the Sheffield/London 80s-tinged synth-pop duo (Millie Gaum, vocals; Andrew Brassleay, synths), one for those who like lustrous electronica. Star rating: ***/5

CARO - ADMIT/RESIST
The debut offering from the dark experimental Leeds-based three-piece, released last week, works around tightly controlled rhythms and swelling guitar. Catch them at Live at Leeds Festival on April 30. Star rating: ***/5

MIKE WYATT - TROUBLE
We featured London-based Mike here over a year ago now. This new track, released at the end of March, was recorded/mixed/produced by the impressively smoky-vocalled Wyatt, and written around a more soulful, blues style. Star rating: ***.5/5
