New Sounds #45 April 14 2016

THE VANNS - I'M NOT THE ONE
Produced by Nathan Sheeby, edgy indie rock from the Oz trio from New South Wales, following last year's 'Sunday To Sunday'. Jimmy Vann pitchs up with some fierce rock 'n' roll energy vocals over punchy beats and bass and some raunchy lyrics: "I’ll strut into your house with my leather jacket on/kick your lover away just like a rolling stone/He said hey boy get your body off of my girl/You know I can’t resist what she’s giving for free/and with legs like that and only seventeen". On tour across Australia from next Monday (April 18). Star rating: ***.5/5

WEST OF THE SUN - SIBERIAN HYSTERIA
London-based psych rock five-piece drop the first track from their self-produced debut album due later in the year. Combining elements of blissed out psychedelia with traces of 60s surf rock, there's a bit of shoegaze here and a touch of Primal Scream there. Out May 6 thru Phoney War Records. Star rating: ****.5/5

HUNTLY - WE MADE IT
Melbourne's "future electronic soul music" exponents blend electronic soundscapes, R&B, and the emotive and chilling manipulated vocals of Elly Scrine, make for something experimental and hypnotic. Launch show April 14 at The Gasometer in Melbourne. Star rating: ****/5

MUTUAL BENEFIT - LOST DREAMERS
Jordan Lee releases his new 'Skip a Sinking Stone' album on May 20 via Transgressive. “We can see stars from here/why would we go back anywhere,” he croons over a soaring arrangement of orchestral strings and percussion, flute and vibraphone on this track. Catch live at Bush Hall, London on April 28. Star rating: ****/5

YUNG - UNCOMBED HAIR
Another offering from the on-the-way debut album from the Danish punks after last month's 'Pills' taster. Melodic garage riffs fill the track vocalist/guitarist Mikkel Holm Silkjær wrote in ten minutes and recorded an hour later. 'A Youthful Dream', comes out on June 10 via Fat Possum. Star rating: ***.5/5
