The Great Escape Artist Preview :: Catholic Action
Continuing our Great Escape festival artist previews, today we take time out with Catholic Action.
Glasgow’s glam rock noise outfit Catholic Action are centred around the singular talents of vocalist and guitarist Chris McCrory, a full-time producer and recording engineer helping many of the artists in Glasgow’s burgeoning DIY scene. They were personally invited by Alex Kapranos to support FFS at their sold-out show at the famous Barrowland Ballroom last August, followed by Carl Barat asking them to open for The Libertines when they played Glasgow’s Academy the month after. Their debut single, the jangle pop and bouncy 'L.U.V' was released this March.
1. First time at TGE?
This is my third in a row, but my first with Catholic Action!
2. Are you a seasoned Escaper as a punter, or a first-time newbie?
Believe it or not, I've never been to any music festival as a punter. An odd record for a record maker…
3. Will you be a Brighton day-tripper or staying for the whole event?
The first year I played I was drumming for Casual Sex in the middle of our European tour. We hopped across the channel and spent no more than five hours total in the UK. The second time, I was torn away from the beach and blistering sunshine for another slog in a van. This year, I'm going to soak it all up. Music, a beer or two and hopefully some sunshine!
4. The highlight of your set will be...?
Showing everyone that we're absolutely not a glam rock band.
5. Where will we be likely to find you after your set: at the bar, on the beach, stuffing fish 'n' chips, or other?
Between gigs, I am going to live on the beach and survive solely on ice cream, sunshine and beer - As is the norm for Brits at the seaside.
6. Aside from building sandcastles on the beach with your little bucket and spade, what else will you be up to in Brighton?
Building sandcastles? I'll be spilling beer on my England top and throwing plastic furniture at France. I'll also definitely pay a visit to that veggie all-you-can-eat Indian restaurant. It's my favourite. That little husband and wife ran French Café too, we had a cracking breakfast there before.
7. Who else playing at TGE are you hoping to see yourself, or would recommend others should put on their must see list?
You should go and see MONEY. 'Suicide Songs' is a masterpiece. I'm also very enamoured with the new Teleman record.
8. Where and when can we catch you at the festival?
Brighthelm - 2:30pm on Thursday 19th; Green Door Store - 7.15pm on Friday 20th.
9. Any tips for festival goers?
See here. Also - turn up to that gig early.
10. Complete this sentence: "You must see us at The Great Escape because..."
You'll fall in love, L.U.V…And we'll give you a great big kiss!
