Listen :: Hugh - Look Back In Laughter

Words: Alex Clemence

'Look Back In Laughter', released on October 12, is the latest offering from London-based outfit Hugh. Made up of Joshua Idehen (vocals), Izzy Brooks (vocals), Andy Highmore (production / keys) and Tino Kolarides (guitars).

This gorgeous track introduces itself with low key glitchy synths leading into hynoptic beats backed with sparse atmospheric guitars and subtle electronica.

It truly is a delight to find a track that works on a less is more basis. There is enough here to keep you going back for more, almost giving you the chance to imagine what other melodies may have been. Hugh truly have got the balance just right here.

However, it isn’t just the melodic backdrop that does all the work. What really sealed the deal is the vocal arrangement on top. Allowing Idehen's warm baritone vocals to sing unaccompanied with the occasional doubling up by Brooks, followed by her tackling the chorus on her own is an absolute masterstroke.

The title of the track should give the game away. This is a track with a positive message and make no mistake: hearing this was possibly the most positive moment of my day.

To celebrate the release of the single, Hugh they will be playing a one-off hometown show at Electrowerkz, London on October 12. They will be supported on the night by Eliza Shaddad, Fran Lobo and Wildhood.
