New Sounds #117 - November 22 2016

THE MARITIME EFFECT - HEADSTRONG
Meaty, rockier, riff-bashing four-minute side of the debut AA-side single (w/ 'Superhuman') from Bedford indie pop-punk four-piece fronted by Lana Freeman, released last week. Catch live at Bedford Esquires on December 9 with The Amazons. Star rating: ★★

NOVELLA - CHANGE OF STATE
Title track from the London-based quartet's second album, out February 17 2017 on Sinderlyn. Recorded with James Hoare (Ultimate Painting, Veronica Falls) on an old 60s 8-track, it is reflective of the decade not just in sound, but also its lyrical references to freedom of thought and those who seek to restrict it. Star rating: ★★

LUNA TIDES - WHAT COMES AROUND
Lightly lilting Welsh folk-rock four-piece from Cardiff environs release their debut EP 'Open Woods' this week. This sentimental number of neatly strummed guitar and kick drums, with Thomas Seddon singing, "You’re like an ecstasy, born to thrive in my heart / And I remember those bright hazel eyes / They tore me apart with a single lie to my heart", against "ooh"-ing harmonies. Catch it played live at a launch party on November 24 at Cardiff’s Clwb Ifor Bach. Star rating: ★★

KING CATCHER - THE LAUNDRY
Released last week, the new electro-pop single from the north London duo: Stephen Bodger (vocals, instruments) and Andy James (instruments, vocals). After February's debut ‘Butterfly’, this newest song is based on an account by one of the survivors of the Magdalene laundries. "It may also be the only song ever released to feature a helicopter, a mellotron and a nun." Star rating: ★★

DUCK - ALWAYS MEET ME IN DREAMZZZZ
Fuzzy noisepop Sheffield duo - Sarah Griffiths (vocals/guitar), Chris Minor (synths/bass/drum machine and vocals) - share one of the tracks from their just released 'sLaCk gOb' EP. Ominously dark, pulsating, it's both haunting and riveting; the closing seconds of heartbeats adding to the track's intangible quality. Catch live tonight (November 22) at Santiago's in Leeds. Star rating: ★★
