10 Little Indie Hot Picks
Fed up with hearing the same old tunes? Well, why not cast your ears over ten of our new specially handpicked hot picks!
CROOKED COLOURS - PLYMOUTH
Following 'Flow' earlier this year, this new track marks the return of the Aussie indie-electronica trio - Philip Slabber, Leon De Baughn and Liam Merrett-Park - an 18-month break. Taken from their just released debut album 'Vera', out now via Sweat It Out.
THE TAMBO RAYS - ALWAYS DOWN
The Oakland, California-based quartet have just shared this new jam from their 'Recharge' EP, out July 17 via OIM Records. The band's sibling duo, Sara (vocals) and Brian (guitar/vocala) DaMert, describe it as "about being there for a friend going through dark times. While holding a strong, loving space, all we could do was acknowledge their sadness and bare witness, gently knowing we're always there."
YELLOW DAYS - THAT EASY
After his debut EP 'Harmless Melodies', 18-year-old George van den Broek reveals new single 'That Easy', taken from his 'Everything OK In Your World?' record to be released later in the year. The track showcases his soul-stirring vocals over a warped, yet melodic, arrangement.
TWIST HELIX - LITTLE BUILDINGS
Digitally released new electro synthpop single out July 22, from Newcastle three-piece, and the second release from their upcoming album 'Ouseburn', which explores the post-industrial redevelopment of the North-East of England.
BOYS - DREAMLAND
Rolling dreampop jangles and laid-back vocals from the London four-piece on the title track from their EP released last Friday (June 28). Woozy, lo-fi pop, that according to the band, is “a love song about originally feeling very strongly towards someone but later questioning yourself about that person and whether it’s the best thing to be around them”.
THE MACHIAVELLIS - SHE
Follow-up to debut single ‘Melancholia', one side of double A single release this month (w/'Grey Day Machine') from experimental shoegaze/ dreampop four-piece from Canterbury, Kent. Megg Rorison's quite exquisite voice is one that needs to be explored further - perhaps in a less experimental, more dreampop mode, that gives it more prominence.
DREAMVACATION - DREAM WORLD
Debut single from LA-based DreamVacation, previously known as Atlantic Line. The vocal here by Zilva Thustraon is hypnotically gripping, and becomes even more potent when hearing Thustraon's description: “The track is about contemplating life and death, whether or not we’ve been here before, possible past and future lives. I contemplated suicide, and then I remembered global extinction. The world has died five times now, how many times has the universe died? How many times have I been born and then died? Doesn’t it all feel very familiar? And so I hesitate...”
ATLAS WYND - EYES FIXED ON THE SUN
New double A-side single (w/'You’re On My Mind’) - out now - from the garage rock three-piece originally from the North East, now Brighton-based. ‘Eyes Fixed On The Sun’ is a riff filled breezy number, that also goes in for some edgy guitar and big chorus.
CALLUM PICKARD - JUNE
Featured a year ago with 'Follow The Sign', Coventry alt-folk singer/songwriter Callum Pickard returns with latest Sufjan Stevens/Bon Iver vibed number - whose horns-player CJ Camerieri is actually to be heard on the track.
CATHEDRALS - WITH YOU
Third single this year after 'Don’t Act Like a Stranger' and 'Try To Fight' from the San Francisco electro-pop duo of producer Johnny Hwin and vocalist Brodie Jenkins. R&B textures merge with with addictive vocals and gossamer synths and percussion that eases through electronic ambience.
