Jack Rocks This Feeling Stage at TRNSMT Festival this weekend - we pick some must sees
Words: Richard Cobb
Big festivals not only act as great exposure for upcoming bands, they’re also the best time to catch some hidden gems on an intimate stage before they hit the big time.
After a rather weary-looking T in the Park has either taken 5 or kicked the bucket, there’s a heavy hitting replacement in the form of TRNSMT Festival taking its place this Friday to Sunday, July 7 - 9, on Glasgow Green and there’s a wealth of new talent on the line up this year.
The Jack Rocks/This Feeling tent is the ideal place to scout new bands this weekend and Dundee’s Carousel will be kicking off the proceedings on Friday afternoon in suitably chaotic fashion. A band we caught back in March alongside fellow TRNSMT performers and Little Indie favourites, The Blinders, who will themselves be performing on Sunday.
West Lothian’s The Phantoms are a band that have been selling out shows throughout Scotland for a few years thanks to their huge sound and infectious on-stage energy. They’ve supported fellow festival giants Catfish and The Bottlemen too, so get down early for these guys.
After a frantic few weeks with huge shows at Glastonbury and Ibiza Rocks, Black Honey will be headlining the Friday night, so if Radiohead aren’t your bag or you’ve cried enough tears and you want something a bit more upbeat, here’s what you can expect...
In November they’ll be supporting Royal Blood on their arena tour, so this weekend is the ideal time to check them out before you see them in the cow sheds later in the year. No strangers to big festivals, The Wytches will be headlining the stage on Saturday.
Before that you’ll want to catch Neon Waltz. A band that have been on my radar for a while now and consistently great live. With previous support slots with The Coral, the band are definitely worth a punt.
It’s often a tag that can haunt bands, but having drawn comparisons to Oasis, Clackmannanshire’s Vida can back up the hype with great songs. Here’s one of them...
Onto Sunday, as mentioned previously, The Blinders are back in Glasgow after their This Feeling show in March and tours alongside Cabbage and The View. If you dare miss them here, you’ll be kicking yourself.
Glasgow’s own Tijuana Bibles are on immediately after. We recently reviewed their latest single 'Pariah', and for that song alone, they should be near the top of your list.
The Shimmer Band are another talented bunch we caught earlier in the year and if their show in Leeds back in April was anything to go by, you’ll be far from disappointed.
With plenty more bands on offer throughout the weekend, stay off the dodgy kebabs, drink plenty evian in between your whisky and tonic wine education and get down the front of the stage.
