Sing & Tell :: Seal Pup

Brighton-based four-piece Seal Pup incorporate a number of influences from dreampop to prog-rock to shoegaze and krautrock in their sound. Their debut single, 'This Time', was released on June 1, and precedes a forthcoming 3-track EP.

Who are you?

Seal Pup is four friends: Sam Barry (vocals, guitar), Tom Tye (guitar), Charlie Herbert (bass) and Ben Lippett (drums).

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today?

Collectively we’re from Brighton, but we all come from different parts of the country. We met at uni a few years ago, bonded over a mutual love for playing Beatles covers, moved in together and decided to form a band.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

We all used to be huge Tame Impala fans, so I think we got caught up in that new wave psych vibe that's gripped the rock world for so long. We’d play songs in our garage that were ridiculously overladen with effects and just drenched in reverb. This was fun and good in that it was a natural part of our progression as a band, but it wasn’t very honest. Now our style’s more nuanced, but we’re still developing it. We all like different music and our influences can change just as often as our own tastes do, so we’re just growing into a style that we can call our own.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

Initially we started out as a kind of lounge room jam band, but then started to think about music more laterally. One of us would just come up with a riff or a beat and we’d go from there, adding things bit by bit until we’ve got something that sounds like a song. Then we’d go back and start taking things away, just gradually tease something out that sounds good to our ears and hopefully to some others. We all have our individual tastes, so we try and incorporate a bit of everyone into all of our songs, so we end up with a sort of amalgam.

Tell us a little about your new single.

‘This Time’ is, I guess, kind of an encapsulation of all the times that we thought we’d come up with a song that we were totally happy with, but then decided that we weren’t. We thought it was a fitting track to debut with, because after quite a while we’ve finally put something together that we’re pretty happy with. Beyond that, we like writing about time because there's still so much to know about it. It’s something that can be equally finite as it is infinite, and it affects everyone and everything in oh so many different ways. Truly mind boggling stuff...

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We’re supporting our friends Giant Peach at The Hope and Ruin in Brighton on June 20th. Later this summer we’ll be playing in Edinburgh at Henry’s Cellar bar on August 23rd and we’re still finalising a few dates in London between that.

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

Over the summer we’ll be releasing a couple more songs, and then hopefully be getting back into the studio to record new material.

Where can we hear more of your music?

At the moment you can find us on Soundcloud and Bandcamp, all streaming services. New music coming soon!

What social media platforms can we find you on?
