Best new tracks from Down Under #33
With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
HOLIDAY PARTY - RUN AWAY
Following 'I’m Still Here' and 'Dream State', the Brisbane duo share their infectious junkyard-pop mixed with lo-fi dreampop style on new track. Singer Mel Tickle and producer Luke McDonald build layers of synths and plucked guitar around an old tinny recording session sample. It works well.
JAGUAR JONZE - YOU GOT LEFT BEHIND
Debut single from the Brisbane-based, Taiwanese/Australian singer-songwriter. The melancholic stroll gradually picks up with twanging guitar interludes, perfectly crafted instrumentation and captivating vocals that provide sensitive lyrics about "watching old friends spiral into their own depths and clinging onto their blissfully ignorant youth. No matter how much you extend yourself to help them move forward with you, in the end it’s a hard thought to realise that it is up to them to make that change. At some point all you can do is step back, call and wait instead of continuously wading in the toxicity alongside them. It’s about how hard it is to decide when to make that call and the pain to then just watch."
JOSIE MOON - CALL ME
21-year-old Wellington, NZ singer/songwriter and producer follows 'After Hours' which Little Indie recently featured, with another sample from her ‘Rose Tinted’ EP, out August 31, on which she recorded with Nik Brinkman. This sparkling electro, synth-layered song, she states, was the "first track we wrote for the EP. I remember experiencing such an overwhelming wash of pink and cherry blossom flowers while writing the track that I wanted to keep writing tracks with colours that worked around it."
SPACEY JANE - COLD FEET
The Perth garage rockers return with this catchy earworm, released August 13, after previous single, 'So You Wanna'. The four minutes are upbeat and roll out as jangly guitars and bubbling basslines interweave with Caleb's emotively rocky voice.
DIVE BELL - UNDERCOVER
Formed late last year, this is the darkly atmospheric debut single, produced by Lachlan Mitchell (The Jezabels), by the Sydney quartet. Employing pop-infused sonics, with a moody undercurrent of understated, yet ethereal, guitar lines, it works on both the experimental level as the fuzzy electronic.
LOS LEO - BEAUTIFUL MESS
Stripped back debut from Adelaide musician Tom Montesi, is certainly beautiful - and definitely no mess! His soulful-esque and fragile voice over percussion punctuated melodies lend the electronic-tinged track grace. "'Beautiful Mess' was one of the first songs I had written for Los Leo. It has taken on a lot of different forms, but I thought the best option was to stip it back and let the song speak for itself," says Tom.
