Stereo Honey debut new single ‘Icarus’ ahead of EP release

Words: Ellie Ward

Announcing the forthcoming release of EP ‘What Makes A Man’ on November 16 via LAB Records, Stereo Honey are giving a taster with new single ‘Icarus’, a soaring, sophisticated statement from the London four-piece.

Always an interesting songwriter, this time frontman Pete Restrick reimagines the Icarus myth, from the point of view of his own relationship with his father, inspired by Christine Hemp's poem of the same name. The track forms part of a body of work examining society’s toxic construct and preconceptions of masculinity.

“I don’t want to be a man anymore. I’m tired of being the strong and silent type. I can’t even breathe. Sometimes I don’t know who I am. I’m just floating in the gutter and screaming through my teeth," says Restrick. "I’m trying to stand up straight but I’m crumbling underneath. What makes a man? This question’s always bothered me. Don’t fucking cry it’s embarrassing, an older boy once said to me. Strength lies in silence and shame in vulnerability. Intimacy and tenderness give way to anger and aggression, the only acceptable forms of expression. I don’t want to be a man anymore. Not that kind of man. I don’t think any man should. It’s a standard that’s impossible to live up to, and it’s killing us.“
