With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
DARVID THOR - LAST TIME
From the eight-track debut mini-album, 'I’m Never Really Here', released at the beginning of March, the Melbourne bedroom artist (of The Cactus Channel and Frida), makes his solo debut. Mellow vocals are augmented by subtle guitars and synth. Catch live at album launch show on March 28 at The Tote in Collingwood, Victoria.
DIDIRRI + RO - TEA STAINS
Produced by Hayden Calnin, and released March 19, this collab between the two Melbourne-based songwriters - Didirri's first since debut EP 'Measurements' - is a laid-back, warm alt-folk stroll between the dual vocalists. “The song is a play on that ‘best friends accidentally falling for each-others’ story, with tensions and unsaid truths over cups of tea. It’s also a subtly sarcastic comment on the idea that a cuppa solves everything. A cuppa is not just a cuppa, and the tiny tea bag contains all of the real baggage.”
RENWICK - THAT'S HOW IT GOES
The 21-year-old Sydney-based musician delivers a three and a half minute psych rock track. with a trop pop/reggae coating. This, his second single, which he describes as "a boppin' dance floor track", is seductively enveloping, and the samples and voice manipulation in the last half are quirkily effective.
DAILY J - BLACK LAGOON
Auckland, NZ outfit comprised of three brothers and a friend who make alt-rock/reggae groove, teamed up with established fellow New Zealander producer Joe Faris to co-write this infectiously upbeat single, complete with silky sax, synth and smooth vocal melodies compared to Arctic Monkeys.
MOON BRAIN - DISGUISE DESPISED
Recorded with Simon Todkill at Pool Studios in London, Sydney-based artist David Rogers offers a rich baritone on this sweeping new track, on which he plays everything except drums. “I wrote this track while really struggling with my identity and finding myself overwhelmed with anxiety. A self-help lament for the highly anxious; to take stock of your internal and external bearings, acknowledge and allow yourself to feel, then try to let it all go."
GIRL YORK - SUNLIT TRANCE
Credit: Josh Wells
The Perth-based grunge-rock trio Girl unveiled their second EP, 'Dreaming In 505', last November from where this psych-infused, sub-three minute single cut is taken. The hypnotic vocals helm the evocative, winding rhythms with a surfy groove.
