Sheffield shoegaze punk quartet Purest have dropped their pink-hued, one-shot performance video for their latest single 'Waste My Days', the title track of their EP, which is out now on Gary Powell's (The Libertines) 25 Hour Convenience Store label.
Who are you?
I’m James Rollings from Purest and I play guitar and sing. The band are Danny Davidson who on bass, Richard Bithery who plays guitar and Ashley Platts on drums.
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
We all met at school and learned to play instruments together. As our music progressed, we met our drummer Ashley at a friend's gig in Sheffield where we are based and stole him to join our band. We started Purest about 2 years ago when we had developed our sound into something we knew was different and our own.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
In terms of influences, it’s quite varied between us. However, we all loved guitar music and anthemic bands like The Libertines and a lot of mid-2000 indie bands, as well as 80s and early 90s influenced noise pop bands such as the Jesus And The Mary Chain, Echo And The Bunnymen and The Cure. I think their influence are the most evident in our own music.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
I often write initial ideas and bring them to the band, where we all add our own touches, then it’s a case of shaping the song as a whole. The production process is very similar. We’ve had the privilege of working with some great producers such as Gethin Pearson and Dan Austin who have worked with a lot of our favourite bands such as The Enemy and The Pixies. It’s always been important to emphasise the songwriting keeping the hooks sharp and the songs concise.
Tell us a little about your new single.
'Waste My Days' encapsulates the throwaway nature of society today, uncertainty and the prevalence of social media projecting perfect lifestyles. Everyone is hiding behind a facade.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
We play at The Leadmill on the 6th of April in Sheffield for Cavendish Calling which is an ace charity gig in aid of Cavendish Cancer Care. You can get more info here. It's only a fiver and proceeds go to the charity.
How's the the year looking, plans-wise?
We’ve been writing ready to record our next single which will be out in the summer which we’re really excited about. There'll be more shows that can hopefully push us into new territories.
