Track Of The Day :: HORLA - Into The Void

Words: Linn Branson

The debut single from new Manchester band HORLA is certainly makes an impressive entrance. The alt-rock four-piece dropped the single, which was produced by Mark Winterburn at Edge Studios, last Friday (April 12) via Earth Day.

Built around layers of complex textures and haunting vocals, the three-minute-plus 'Into The Void is one of those big stadium-size, atmospherically ethereal numbers that will stick in the mind after the first hearing - and require another immediately.

It has more than an echo of another Manchester band, the late Embers, to it - which may not be too unusual given that their former drummer, Nathan Howard, has now come out from behind the skins to vocally front this new enterprise.

“'Into The Void' is a song about feeling lost and confused, anger at social hierarchy and feeling a total loss of identity," is how Howard describes the track. "Constantly at war with oneself and society's fractured infrastructure and the need to escape our own vices. Our voices are never heard as we are oppressed by the pressures of the world we can’t control. It’s one last giant gasp at saving yourself."
