With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
ALMOND SOY - COAT
The Perth outfit strike out with a final 2019 blast of indie-pop. The lead cut from their second EP, 'Under The Wait', the laid-back number, with its running guitar melodies and pop hooks delivers an 80s, new wave vibe. "'Coat' is a song that romanticises the idea of change, the feeling of needing to get away from a cloud that surrounds an individual's headspace," say the band.
GIRLBOSS - REAL
Wellington, NZ garage-pop project, helmed by songwriter and guitarist Lucy Botting, offer the last of three tracks released this year following their 2018 debut EP 'Body Con'. Low intensity instrumentation supports Botting's easy vocal style.
THE POCKET ROAD - AUTUMN
Released last week (Dec 20), the follow up to Brisbane-based singer/ songwriter Harry Powell's October debut single 'warm clothes'. Melding acoustic indie with an alt-folk, country-rock filter, the sub-four minute track meanders on a breeze, before picking up pace just before the midway point.
LUCKY BOY - MARIE TE PO (SILENT NIGHT)
Auckland, NZ's lo-fi bedroom artist brings a dreamy flair with this Māori version of 'Silent Night'. The "very well known Christmas carol with a neat little spin on it" also features the voices of Siobhan Leilani (NahBo), Carla Camilleri (Boycrush) and Lucy Campbell (Tree Nurse). "Christmas is a very weird time of year for a large number of people, and I think we should embrace that weirdness and not get too caught up in the façade of the whole thing. Let's all just be extra lovely to each other and have a bit of compassion for your fellow human beings, and a bit of respect for other cultures," he says.
FRAGILE ANIMALS - WAITING
Produced by Dylan Adams (DMA’s, Skeggs), the Brisbane/Sunshine Coast trio recently dropped this latest bittersweet single that fuses dreamgaze with a touch of alt-rock. Vocalist Victoria Jenkins provides a rich slice of pop alongside driving drums and rich guitar tones. “So many of the people I worked that day, as well as the friends I caught up with that night, were seriously struggling with their mental health and things going on in their lives. It just felt so messed up. How have we created a society where so many of us are legitimately not coping?! For me this song lyrically carries the weight of all of that, but was also me looking in the mirror genuinely wondering if I was okay," says Jenkins.
WAXFLOWER - TOGETHER
We last heard from the Brisbane-based four-piece with their guitar-driven 'Back To Back', in August. Now they return with a new emotive pop-punk single to end the year. "'Together' is an important snapshot of a difficult period in my life. I needed that internal acknowledgment of what was happening to me. It's a kind of rally call to getting better by putting things into perspective," says vocalist/bassist Tristan Higginson. Catch live on December 31 at AM/PM NYE Party at Crowbar, Brisbane.
