Little Indie's Ones To Watch 2020 Part One
It's that time of year once again where Little Indie has rounded up our longlist of emerging artists who we think will be worth taking a gamble on in 2020, as well as a few who 'hatched' awhile ago but are now ready - we think - to break free.
FIVE KITES
Five Kites have been going from strength to strength every gig they play, but with a new bass player onboard they seem to have perfected their craft of grungy indie punk, with a few Nirvana chords and False Heads flair thrown in helped by a blond mop-haired frontman in Harvey Chip. Luckily they combine lots of different styles in their music from exploding guitar riffs to tender melodies which makes this band so versatile. And, despite seeing them five times in 2019, I’ve not been bored once. Steve Willcox
TWST
Named recently by the Guardian as a newcomer to watch, Little Indie has had the 21-year-old London-based Welsh songstress and producer ChloƩ Davis in our sights since hearing last autumn's 'Always'. Her vocal style is a Kate Bush for the new generation; idiosyncratic, intriguing, hypnotic, she couples sharp observations with electronic wizardry. Linn Branson
SWIM SCHOOL
After a strong 2019, Edinburgh’s indie pop quartet Swim School are diving head first into the New Year with a sellout hometown show at the city’s best venue, Sneaky Pete’s on February 22. There’s something in the water with these guys and I’ve got high hopes for them to succeed this year. Richard Cobb
VLURE
With virtually no online presence, Glasgow’s VLURE rose out of the ashes of the band Alligator, who had to pull out of The Great Escape Festival back in May - and totally blew my mind with their dark indie sound that’s similar to Fontaine’s D.C, but with added synths. Frontman Hamish Hutcheson has the ability to show us the pain and passion in his vocals while the music is fast-paced with driving guitar riffs throughout. Upcomiing dates in Dundee, Dunfermline and Glasgow must be worth the money. Steve Willcox
ARLO PARKS
Arlo Parks, the South London musician and poet, is a mere 19 years old, but her talent is formidable, as she demonstrated on 2018's debut single 'Cola'. Nominated on the BBC Sound of 2020 longlist, her fusion of jazz, soul, and hip hop is uniquely crafted with her own spin. With a UK tour in February, and a showing at SXSW, this should be the year for Ms Parks. Ellie Ward
