Best new tracks Down Under #12

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

CLEA - SOFT BLOW TO THE HEAD

Following Brisbane indie pop artist Clea’s (pronounced 'Clay') debut album 'Vermillion' in 2018, she precedes her second full-length with this new track, where her intoxicating voice mingles with lush instrumentation. “‘Soft Blow to the Head’ relives the moments in which you slip back into the enchanting toxicity of a domineering person, eventually gaining the courage and hindsight to move forward,” she says. “It’s like a deep breath with a long sigh, it moves through emotion without rest and reveals that, in order to really appreciate your best life, you sometimes have to go through a bad experience.”

CRY CLUB - OBVIOUS

Little Indie first heard Melbourne-via-Wollongong queer bubblegum punk duo, Heather (They/Them) and Jono (He/Him), last summer with 'Two Hearts'. Now they drop this latest effervescently bouncy track. "'Obvious' is about how your life can be the best and worst simultaneously, the emotional whiplash that comes from the most exciting things happening, while your life is also falling apart," they say.

BAD PONY - FOREVER MY LOVE

We last featured the Sydney five-piece with the punchy, guitar heavy 'Villain' last November. Now the indie rockers return with this pulsing number, filled with hypnotic synth strains and reverbed vocals. “‘Forever My Love’ is about a ring that I inherited from my parents,” explains the band's Jarred Young. “My mum bought it for my dad before they got married and it has the phrase ‘forever, my love’ inscribed on the inside. I wear it every day and think the message is really beautiful."

LASHES - TREASON

From Ballarat, Lashes aka Yohanna Bright, makes her debut with the three-minute ‘Treason'. Released last week, the electronic-pop single, given Lashes' own individual touch, is "about falling for someone new while still being in a relationship. It started out as a sincere apology to my then boyfriend and grew from there."

NINA IN ECSTASY - GOD

"A little bit darkwave. A little bit pop" is how Adelaide-based solo artist Nina in Ecstasy, the solo music project of Em König (of GIRL/Winter Witches), describes this debut cut from the forthcoming EP 'GodBoyPartyPill', due for release later in 2020. Dark synthpop with haunting vocals and lush production, it feels chilling, yet welcoming.

TORII - SYNTHETIC CHEMISTRY

From her self-titled debut album due later this year, the Melbourne singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist offers this sultry vocalled and richly textured, neo-soul cut, co-produced with Victoria Petkopoulos, described lyrically as "a smooth ride into the hectic realm of anxiety and self-medicating."
