Words: Steve Willcox
Premiered on Radio X by John Kennedy, Camden five-piece Couples have just dropped their explosive new single 'Faites L'amour' this week.
The Little Indie One To Watch band for 2020 are certainly proving their worth with this cracker of a tune.
'Make love, not war' (Faites l’amour pas la guerre) was a familiar anti-war slogan of the 60s hippy generation, but Couples interpretation is frenetic and passionate 4:29, from its easy opener to the soaring guitar riff that has vocalist Conor Collingwood mixing cosmopolitan lyrics with fervent passion.
The descent into torment is clear with lines like “Blackened skies and shades I never felt to fear” and “Spit out the venom you want, but don’t pretend it’s for me”. Throughout is a sense of urgency that builds until its final third, with heated beats and crashing guitars.
'Faites L'amour' is a storming effortof the unimaginable pain of heartache. Magnifique.
