With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
PEAK PARK - PLEASE DON'T BE SO HARD ON YOURSELF
The three-piece art-rock project from Melbourne have just released this latest self-produced single last week. "‘Please Don't Be So Hard On Yourself’ voices thoughts of anxiety, defeat and the difficulties of coping with identity," says vocalist Mitch Summers. "It also deals with the internal stigma that struggling with mental health is something to feel shameful about and feeling like a burden for opening up to others." From its low key opening. the track builds on pulsing electronic beats and swirling space-pop sonics.
KEY OUT - STRAY
Sydney's indie electro trio Key Out -
Paddy Haid (vocals guitar synths), Caroline Wake (vocals synths percussion), Rohan Geddes (drums) - dropped this new single this week. The fuzzy, alt-shoegaze-esque cut from their second album 'Anthropomorphia', out June 26 via Half A Cow Records, was home recorded, and is "about tricking ourselves into seeing big differences where only small ones exist,” says Haid.
TRAVALLEY - DEAR BABE
The driving 'Dear Babe' is the latest from Melbourne brothers Levi and Sam Mellington, aka Travalley, about lead singer Levi’s social awkwardness and lack of flirting ease. The punchy indie rock track comes with catchy backing vocals was recorded in a Melbourne home studio, engineered by Fabian Hunter and mixed and mastered by Austin Asvanonda (The War on Drugs).
SWEATER CURSE - CLOSE
Brisbane's Sweater Curse follow 2019's debut EP 'See You' with this first cut from their next EP. Released this week, ‘Close’, written with Alex Lahey and produced by Ball Park Music’s Sam Cromack, hits with pounding bass and grungy guitars. Guitarist Chris Langenberg says of the song's lyrical theme, that “It talks of the struggles within a relationship (friendship, general or romantic) and at times it explores themes and emotions of self-deprecating.”
SHE LOVES YOU - DEVOUT

Fierce four-piece Auckland, NZ-based She Loves You are back with their rocking alt-pop new number, 'Devout'. Building on their debut single 'Dirty Orlean', 'Devout' - inspired by the feelings experienced at the beginning of a relationship - is driven by a solid line of melodic riffs, rumbling bass and steady drums, behind Madeline Berry's attitude edged vocals.
ASH HENDRIKS - ABOVE WATER
Dark and intriguing, 'Above Water' is Sydney-via-Perth artist Ash Hendriks’ latest slice of hypnotic alt-pop electronica, taken from EP 'Touch', due later this year. Wrapped around lush layers of smooth vocals and pulsing effects, while synths slowly build in the background. "This song is about keeping afloat and seeing out the flight during tough times.”
