With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
CLEA - SUGAR
We heard Brisbane indie pop artist Clea (pronounced 'Clay') earlier in the year with 'Soft Blow to the Head’, now she returns with an emotive new single, ’Sugar’. Written during the Australian bushfires in early 2020, when Clea was feeling a sense of dread and hopelessness as the inferno engulfed the country. “I was overcome with emotion and felt the strongest desire to cower and crawl in the corner. It is the nature of humans turning a blind eye to a situation to save oneself of hurt, but in this instance there was truly no way of hiding. It saddens me deeply that it takes for the country to burn and our chests to fill with smoke to truly start to take seriously the issue of climate change and the great stress humans place on this incredible earth.”
SKEGGS - UNDER THE THUNDER
Byron Bay rock trio Skegss have released a rollicking new single 'Under the Thunder', produced by Catherine Marks (Manchester Orchestra, PJ Harvey, The Killers), alongside a video directed by Kai Neville. Filmed on 16mm, the clip sees the band - Ben Reed (vocals, guitar), Toby Cregan (bass), and Jonny Lani (drums) - break out from quarantine to take a day trip in Cregan’s yellow commodore, with psychedelic worms in tow. “This song is about enjoying the rollercoaster of life, no one can live forever so you may as well enjoy the seasons and becoming," says Reed. "There’s not always going to be a solution to some situations that you’re in, so you have to take the good with the bad and ride it out, and just enjoy a beer when you can and not think about any of the bad things in your life. Nature will always have its way at the end of the day.”
MOLLY MILLINGTON - CIRCUS ANIMAL
Intriguing Central Coast artist, 19-year-old Molly Millington, delivers an off-kilter track that is as sonically attention-grabbing with its quirky audio effects, dreamy vocals and twinkling percussion, as it is lyrically adept with allegory relaying personal experience of being burnt out by tasking management, being made to perform like a "circus animal".
FEELSCLUB - TALKTALK
Brisbane outfit FeelsClub are back with the first cut from upcoming EP, 'A Wave Inevitable'. 'talkTALK' is a smooth three minutes filled with dark indie hooks and strident beats, and is something of a new direction for the group, after last year's impressive 'After The Fall'. “In short, this song is about every hard conversation you’ve ever had with someone you love, whose opinion disgusts you,” says frontman St Jonnie. “Growing up with someone as a hero in your mind, believing who you are is because of what they set as an example, and them then saying some fucking cooked shit.”
NEELAY - FOR HER
Following 'Pure Water Freestyle' and 'Criminal', Sydney hip hop artist Neelay Pandey released this new track last month. Drawing on his Indian-Australian upbringing, 90s rap culture along with the new hip-hop wave, to produce a unique hybrid that straddles the genres with satisfying beats and complex arrangement.
MINIQ - LITTLE MISS NO. 1
Credit: April Josie
The New South Wales alt-rock duo MINIQ - sisters Isabelle and Dominique Morgan - drop this, their debut single, that makes for a solid and assertive entrance by the siblings, drawing comparisons to HAIM. Utilising an array of expansive percussion and a heavy bassline against crunchy guitars melodies and the powerful voice of singer Dominique. "[It's] something everyone can relate to," she says. "Everyone knows or has been involved in a one-sided relationship, giving more than you should to someone who doesn’t deserve it."
