Club Paradise Sing & Tell on 'Growing Up', working in lockdown, and musical influences

Newcastle indie-rock four-piece Club Paradise kicked off 2020 with the release of 'Teenagers', and have now followed with 'Growing Up' - on which they  worked in isolation for the first time with each band member recording remotely.

Hi, we're Little Indie... and you are...?

Hey, guys, I’m Ryan Young, I sing and play guitar. Then there’s also Jackson Vert who plays lead guitar. And we have Nathan Hogg on drums, and Harry Webb playing bass.

Give us a brief snapshot about yourself and what brought you to where you are today.

We all grew up in North Shields, a little town just outside of Newcastle and have all been friends since school - me and Nathan grew up together in the same street and Harry and Jackson went to the same primary school. I met those guys when we all went to high school together and eventually introduced them to Nathan when we decided to start making music. Since then we’ve done a shed load of writing and gigging as musicians together and a lot growing as people, too; we're completely different to when we all got together 10 years ago at the age of 13/14 to who we are now. We all have very different jobs in very different places, but really it’s as if nothing's ever changed.

For those in the dark, provide us with a clue to your musical style and influences.

Collectively, we tend to go with Foals, The Midnight and Jungle, but I think as individuals we have a lot of different tastes which really brings a lot to the table when we’re creating. We always listen to White Lies in the van together that’s something I think is a big ritual for us musically. Nathan is a huge Maccabees fan, Jackson loves all things Elliot Minor, Harry listens to everything and it’s really hard to pin him down but Panama are huge for him. I’m more along the lines of Bombay Bicycle Club and that sort of thing.

Can you explain a little about your production and writing process.

I think this can change by song, whether one of us has an individual idea or we’re all in a room playing together they come out of very different places and I feel like are always a snapshot of my brain at the time of writing. I don’t ever realise it at the time but I can definitely reflect further down the line and pick out those moments. We’ve also had quite a varied production process. With our latest release 'Growing Up', everything was virtual. We had the drum takes from a session where we were trying a few ideas out for the track and then all of us recorded guitars, bass and vocals in isolation, but in real time thanks to some production wizardry from Antonio Hanna who we’ve worked with on a few tracks now, check him out at @freefallstudios - he’s an absolute genius.

Tell us more about your new single.

I guess I answered half of that one before, sorry! But myself and Jackson wrote that track together in my spare room in April 2019, I think, then we sat on it for a while and it was while we were recording 'Teenagers' that we re-visited it. We had always planned to release it after 'Teenagers' but it was just by chance that we had the drum takes when entering lockdown and Antonio just really nailed what we were trying to achieve even over internet calls and such.

The track is fundamentally about losing what freedoms you don’t realise you have as a kid, which are absolutely the best time of our lives, but in another sense it’s about how disposable everything has became and how nobody cherishes physical memories anymore, be it holding photographs or buying records, they’re a rarity and for me it’s an awful thing to happen - some of my favourite past time include both of those and it feels almost spiritual to me.

Obviously at this time we won't be able to catch up with you at any live shows just yet, but can you tell us what you may have pencilled in otherwise for the rest of the year?

Our next releases are at the ready but we can’t say anything else just yet! We’ve had an incredibly productive lockdown with some special stuff thrown in there too which we are just itching to get out for everyone to hear!

Where can we hear more of your music?

We’re on all major streaming platforms - Soundcloud, Spotify, YouTube - so please do have a listen and let us know which tracks you like!

What social media platforms can we find you on?
