Warrington-based garage-punk outfit The Lotts today drop their debut EP 'We Are The Lotts', which was recorded at Monmouth’s Rockfield Studios. Available on 12” vinyl via Liverpool-based label Whispering Pines, the five-track EP embraces the ferocious, fast-paced and loud nature of the quartet's live set.
Hi, we're Little Indie... and you are?
This is Henry Buchanan, vocals and guitar. Our other members are Adam Bridge on guitar and vocals, Jamie Evans, bass, vocals, and Joel Norton on drums and vocals.
Give us a brief snapshot about yourself and what brought you to where you are today.
We were all in the same class at college, we just ended jamming in our free periods to kill time and it ended up being something serious. We never thought we’d make a band of it originally. We did a few gigs in Warrington, and eventually we thought we should get some studio time and get some of our stuff recorded... and three years later, here we are.
For those in the dark, provide us with a clue to your musical style and influences.
Our main influences are just classic rock n’ roll and garage rock. I mean, we all listen to different bands and stuff, but it's all in the same ballpark. Our music is just rock n’ roll, baby. We want simple balls-out rock out to the masses and there's hardly any bands doing that, so I guess it's our duty.
Can you explain a little about your production and writing process.
Our writing process is really simple. One of us will come up with a riff or something and we will all just jump on it with our own instruments and put a few lyrics behind it - and boom, you got a Lotts song. We never spend more than 15 mins on a song. If we spend a long time writing stuff the fun just goes out of it.
Tell us more about your new EP.
We are really lucky to have Thighpaulsandra to produce all our stuff, he's a wizard when it comes to live recording and to do it at Rockfield Studios is really amazing. We record everything live so you need someone who really gets that and is on the same page as us. We've recorded with other producers at other studios in the past and just scrapped it because we can’t get the sound that Thighpaulsandra does for us, so it's so cool that we can play our songs like it’s a live set and just sit back knowing he’s gonna make it sound bomb.
Obviously at this time we won't be able to catch up with you at any live shows just yet, but can you tell us what you may have pencilled in otherwise for the rest of the year?
I think we had a few rescheduled that we was supposed to be playing to next year, but I'm talking to a promoter friend of mine who’s doing some social distancing gigs in an alley in Manchester to raise money for The Peer Hat and AATMA - which are two venues in Manchester in the same building. It's kind of the centre of music at the minute for new music in Manchester, so it's a really cool cause; hopefully we can do a set there in the coming weeks.
