Sing & Tell :: Mauve

Credit: Neil Parkinson

London rock-pop trio Mauve made their debut in August with the single 'Pulled Apart', followed closely by 'Familiar'. Both tracks are taken from their forthcoming six-track EP, 'Pulled Apart', out on November 1.

Who are you?

I'm Ben Smith, drummer with Mauve. Then there is vocalist/guitarist Steve Campbell, and Ieuan Smith on bass and vocals.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

Mauve are a three-piece rock-pop band from London. The band started in 2017 through Ben and Steve meeting on Gumtree (a popular forum for musicians) and Ieuan being a friend and previous bandmate of Ben's. We've been working hard to write and record these songs over the last nine months and create the most effective pop/rock songs we can. We aim mix a blend of simplistic, angsty, rocky riffs with pop soaked melodies.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

Biffy Clyro, The Xcerts, Turnover, Tiny Moving Parts and Taking Back Sunday.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

We spent the majority of the nine months writing the songs via iPhone voice recorder and met up every week to put the songs together. When it came time to record we did it in two sessions with long time friend and producer Dan J Lambert. We have a great time recording, we're all friends so there's a great vibe in the studio. He's a really great producer and he listens to similar music to us so really gets the sound we're after.

Tell us a little about your new EP.

During writing our upcoming EP 'Pulled Apart' we had a show in South London to test the songs out. We only invited close friends to the show and this song got the best reaction. We decided then to craft it more over the next few months before recording - during this time we almost re-wrote the whole thing including melodies and structure, there are still elements of the original song in there [title track] but it's definitely come a long way since we first played it. It's easily our favourite song to play!

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

Yes, November we're playing Portland Arms in Cambridge on 18th, an acoustic set at The Gladstone, London, on 24th, and the Dublin Castle in Camden on the 25th.

How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?

We are back in the studio recording three songs in December which will be released with a video early next year.
We're also working on another cover and collaboration which will be out early next year also.
