Australian songstress Ayla makes big with her sublime 'Small Talk'
Words: Linn Branson
It's hard not to say wow, wow, wow on listening to the quite mesmerising voice of Brisbane songstress Ayla on her latest 'Small Talk’.
This stunning track doesn't warrant being made a Track Of The Day - it is just too bloody good: Track Of The Week - Month - even probably wouldn't do it the justice it deserves.
Following 'Like The Other Kids' - which has garnered over one million online streams - from her ‘Let’s Talk Monday’ EP released at the start of 2018, Ayla’s lyrical ability on 'Small Talk’ easily captures the melancholy of those times followimg partings when the feelings for someone remain constant.
Highlighted by minimal production featuring solemn drums and guitar, her yearning voice showcases her incredible vocal capabilities, evoking all kinds of emotion in the listener.
"I was afraid of the rawness of 'Small Talk' when I first wrote it," she says, "but I’ve gotten more comfortable with that and also found new meaning in the song."
I saw you on the street last week
You stopped and asked me
‘How’s your life, how’s everything?’
I saw you on the bus
Saw in the cafe
I see you everywhere I see you everyday
Except when they turn around
and it’s not your face
Thanks again for writing me
One day I hope to see you and hear you speak
If it’s not too hard
Thanks again for minding me,
You always did
Have my best interests at heart
Except when I hurt you and
You need your space
But if I could do one thing
before I expire
I would Small Talk with you
till the night when we’d tire
Then I’d sleep in your arms again
one last time
I would kiss you goodbye
I’m sorry that we found again
I guess it’s just hard
To be just friends
But I’d really like to see you again
And I’m so glad
You took the time to see me then
You’re my best
Friend
And if I could do one thing
before I expire
I would Small Talk with you
till the night when we’d tire
Then I’d sleep in your arms again
one last time
I would kiss you goodbye
Oh if I could do one thing
before I expire
I would Small Talk with you
till the night when we’d tire
Then I’d sleep in your arms again
one last time
I would kiss you goodbye
I would kiss you goodbye
I would kiss you goodbye
Just four sublime minutes of perfection.
