Track Of The Day :: Club Paradise - Kirby Keger

Words: Izzy Butler

On hearing the title of the latest single from Newcastle’s Club Paradise. ‘Kirby Keger', first thoughts were who or what is Kirby Keger? Person, place, animal, vegetable or mineral? Without too much probing it turns out to be the lead character in the 80s film St. Elmo’s Fire.

“There’s a particular line in the film which that resonates with what we did with this track," explains vocalist and guitarist Ryan Young. "It's the notion of nostalgia when Kirby Keger is mid-monologue and, amongst a trail of memories, says: 'Remember that big fountain, the one on main campus that said knowledge, art, religion, life?' That sentiment just matches perfectly with what’s behind the song.

"Kirby is the full picture; its wonder turns into drama and its highs into lows, from running away from real life into a windswept crush, to the apparent circumstances of staying up all night needing to escape. It resonates. So when anyone asks why you do what you do, Kirby is our way of saying fuck it, you did it for you and that’s not selfish - that's OK."

Okay, our end too. The single, which was premiered on BBC Introducing In The North East, is out tomorrow (March 29), and you can get on it in all its glossy, bouncy, synth glory, below, now.
