Coventry's dark indie-poppers BLVFF Sing & Tell

BLVFF (pronounced 'bluff') are a dark, indie-pop collective from Coventry, who Little Indie first came upon late last year with their debut release 'Where Did We Go Wrong'. Now signed to new indie label These Bloody Thieves Records, BLVFF have just produced their follow-up single, 'Shame', which arrived on April 5.

Who are you?

Michael McCann, lead singer/lyricist with BLVFF. Then there's lead guitarist Mark Fazakarley, Declan McCann on bass, and John Withers on drums, percussion and backing vocals.

Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.

BLVFF hail from Coventry in the West Midlands after forming in late 2017 under suspicious circumstances. At the time of forming the band, we didn’t really want anyone to know about it. We weren’t sure where the group was going to go. We were doing it for ourselves, so we kept it to ourselves.

Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.

Well, as we mentioned, we’ve gotten a dark, indie pop tag from our subsequent offerings, which we kind of like. Arctic Monkeys, are one of our biggest influences. On the Arctic Monkey album chart scale, I'd like to think we sit somewhere between 'Humbug' and 'Suck It And See', with splashes of 'AM'. Other influences include, Oasis, DMA’s, Beatles, Libertines, Milburn, Tame Impala, The Strokes, The Smiths, to name a few.

Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.

It’s a unique process for sure. The melody always comes first. Then the lyrics. Our songs are usually born through hummed voice notes, before John our drummer, gets some meat on the bones. At this point he’ll usually knock up a rough instrumental demo. (the lad's a genius) which we then take it to the practice room and start to build the song, everyone chipping in with ideas on arrangements, tones, BV’s. We then usually pull it apart and go round in circles, before agreeing if we like it or not. It can be a very meticulous process. We then home demo any song we create

Tell us a little about your new single.

'Shame' is really based upon the realisation of being in the wrong. Taking responsibility for your actions and wrong doings. Instead of being the problem, waking up and being the solution, but also appreciating, it’s not always that simple.

Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?

We play our first ever headline home town show in Coventry, on Friday 24th May, at The Empire. Tickets for this one are almost gone, so we’re expecting a sell out. We also have some other big gigs and festivals to announce, so they’ll be plenty of chances to catch us this summer.

How's the the year looking, plans-wise?

Apart from the hometown gig and the big name festivals to announce, we hope to release two further singles this year. We currently have around 10 demos we have worked on, so we'll continue the writing process, before heading back to the studio early October. We’ll also be looking to squeeze in some more live dates around the the UK and Ireland.

Where can we hear more of your music?

BLVFF can be found on Spotify, Apple Music, Amazon, Deezer, YouTube, SoundCloud and via the good people at These Bloody Thieves Records.
