The Brighton Mix-Up promises a free 3 days of seaside music
Words: Linn Branson
With the official Great Escape taking from Thursday over three days, along with its wristband-free, multi-venue side partner, The Alternative Escape, there are also other events taking place not affiliated to either.
One of which is the three-day Brighton Mix-Up taking place at the city's Black Lion venue, organised by Kick Out The Jams, End Of The Trail Creative and Benumu, and sponsored by Rotor Videos and Blackstar Amplification.
"I run regular 'Mix-Up' events in London through my Kick Out The Jams promotions company, such as The Camden Mix-Up (The Good Mixer, The Dublin Castle), The Kings X Mix-Up (The Water Rats) and from July, The Deptford Mix-Up," says one of the event's promoters, Roger Kent. "This will be the first one in Brighton though. In previous years I have run my Brighton events as part of The Alternative Escape - last year I ran four Alt Escape shows."
The event is supporting War Child too? "Yes, War Child UK is an official charity partner of one of my co-promoters, Benumu. We will be collecting money for War Child on all three days in collection buckets and tins at the venue. The event itself is free entry."
Described as 'three days of rock n roll madness beside the sea', the line-up includes up and coming acts such as Avalanche Party, Sisteray, SONS, Berries, Al Moses, JEPH, Pip Hall, Pink Cigar, Suncharmer and Violet. (See full list of 45 bands below, and click link for day and times.)
"The line-up has been curated by myself, Kelly Munro at End of The Trail and Simon Williams at Benumu," adds Kent, "and mainly reflects the bands we are working with either in a management role in Kelly's case, as a promoter in my case, or as a member of an online artist support platform is Simon's case."
So, if you're in Brighton between May 9 - 11, make sure you head to the Black Lion for a pint and a few hours' worth of free sounds.
