The Great Escape Q + A :: Gaffa Tape Sandy

Credit: Bridie Florence Cummings

It's time once again for Little Indie's annual seaside excursion to The Great Escape - and for our usual pick of some of the artists we have down for bringing something special to the Brighton festival.

Today we feature Gaffa Tape Sandy. The Brighton-via-Bury St Edmunds three-piece garage-rock outfit - Kim Jarvis (vocals, guitar), Catherine Neilson (vocals, bass), Robin Francis (drums) - released last single 'Headlights' in March, which conveyed a mental health message with pop-punk spirit.

1. First time at TGE?

Nope! This will be our second year at The Great Escape. It will be a bittersweet flurry of emotions I imagine considering that one of our favourite venues, Sticky Mike's Frog Bar, has closed since last year. But we’re emotional all the time anyway. I cry all the time so this won’t be anything new, and luckily there are many fantastic venues that remain.

2. Are you a seasoned Escaper as a punter, or a first-time newbie?

I wouldn’t describe myself as seasoned or as a newbie, somewhere in between. A Shooobie.

3. Will you be a Brighton day-tripper or staying for the whole event?

We're actually all at university in Brighton and currently live here, so we can't really escape it! But yes, we have a silly big list of bands we wanna see at The Great Escape this year, so you’ll probably see us about. Most likely screaming “the end is nigh!!” because of the impending heat wave. We always do that when it gets hot.

4. The highlight of your set will be...?

The bit around 5-7 minutes in when we remember that we brought towels to relieve us of hyper-perspiration! Hopefully, that won't be the highlight for others though, otherwise we're doing something wrong.

5. Where will we be likely to find you after your set: at the bar, on the beach, stuffing fish n chips, or other?

I don’t know exactly where the band and I will be, but I can promise you we will be overwhelmed and crying cathartically.

6. Aside from building sand(-or probably more pebble)castles on the beach with your little bucket and spade, what else will you be up to in Brighton?

Crying! But this time because of uni deadlines that are drawing nearing.

7. Who else playing at TGE are you hoping to see yourself, or would recommend others should put on their must see list?

Oh blimey, here we go… in no particular order!

Wooze
Black MIDI
Beach Riot
Doe
Gender Roles
Indoor Pets
Lady Bird
Snapped Ankles
Porridge Radio

8. Please give your festival appearance/s, venues and stage times.

Alcopop! Records x Big Scary Monsters showcase on Saturday 11th May - The Prince Albert - 1pm. We'll also be playing a free entry unofficial show at Beyond Retro at some point over the weekend, with Marsicans and Orchards, so keep an eye out!

9. Any tips for festival goers?

Stay hydrated. If you don't like the taste of plain water, try adding a slice of lemon or lime to your drink.

10. Complete this sentence: "You must see us at The Great Escape because..."

... we once got described as a cross between Bring Me The Horizon and Busted. Doesn’t that sound terrible? Give it a go!
