Best new tracks Down Under #24

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

MOUSEY - EXTREME HIGHS

Christchurch, NZ singer-songwriter Sarena Close has dropped this debut single, the first track from her upcoming album 'Lemon Law'. Catchy, breezy indie-pop, with lyrics that relate to her time living with nine others in a cramped flat.

SOAKED OATS - DON'T CHEW

Dunedin, NZ sludge-pop rockers have just released their 'Sludge Pop' EP via Dot Dash / Rhythmethod. This track - described by the band's Oscar Mein as "inspired by the line from Cormac McCarthy’s ‘All the Pretty Horses’ - 'my daddy used to tell me not to chew on something that was eatin’ you'" - is a more slo-mo roller, taking a low-key, minimalist approach.

NICK NUISANCE & THE DELINQUENTS - TALK TO NO ONE

Recorded live to tape, and sounding rather like something from the US East Coast, these Sydney garage-rockers wrap it all up in a mere 73 seconds of fuzzy punk, taken from their 'Dumb Fuzz' EP, released last week.

THE DARDI SHADES - YEAH YOU'RE YOUNG

Produced by Adrian Breakspear (Gang of Youths, Boy & Bear), the Sydney indie rockers unveil an infectious and likeable jangly new single. Carried by Stewart Patterson's vocal, and a tight rhythm section. “’Yeah You're Young’ is generally a sentiment of encouragement for the listener to take chances in their immediate situation as nothing worth doing comes easy," he says.

BENEE - WANT ME BACK

Hailing from the Auckland, NZ 'burbs, 19-year-old indie pop artist returns with her latest single, following her Gold-certified 'Soaked' and viral hit 'Evil Spider' - and precedes her debut EP 'Fire On Marzz', set for release on June 28 - this new cut takes the pace down, driving her sensitive vocal delivery over the R&B freestyled pop fusion.

SLOW DIAL - STANDING THERE

Released at the beginning of June, this atmospheric track is the latest single from the Canberra alt-rock quartet. Filled with guitar riffs - the opening seconds are excellent - and guitarist Damon Mudge's dry, raw vocal.
