Best new tracks Down Under #30

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

DARTZ - 40 RIDDIFORD STREET8

Ahead of next month's debut EP, 'No Matter Whatz', the Wellington, NZ outfit rail against rented flats as they recall the worst they lived in - at 40 Riddiford Street. An infectious, spiky punk anthem, with wry lines like "an apple a day keeps the asbestos away" and "900 a week to live like we're squatting".

FRIENDS OF FRIENDS - LIE

First single from the upcoming EP by Brisbane-based Barnaby Baker, who has downgraded from a former band project to a solo venture. A melancholic, 80s-styled alt-pop song that draws on electronic elements with new wave influences. The song's title comes from the lyric "I never want to lie to you," as the song follows a personal story of loving someone, hurting someone and staying up all night thinking about them.

TIA GOSTELOW - GET TO IT

Released last week, the uplifting new single, from the Brisbane-based artist, whom we last heard from in April with 'Blue Velvet'. Combining her enchanting, yet fragile, voice with warm melodies, singalong chorus, catchy beats and highly relatable lyrics, 'Get To It', she says, is about "not waiting until you think something is perfect to do it, not following the norm and doing things on your own terms. Just getting out there and getting shit done, how you want to do it and not feeling restricted by age or experience. This is a new mindset for me, becoming more self-aware and not allowing my own fears to hold me back and keep me from being the best version of myself, regardless of who likes it or not.”

PALM VALLEY - SUMMER LOVER

New South Wales high school teens, comprised of 17-year-old Ryan Smart, vocals, guitar, and 15-year-old drummer Arden Booker, unveil this debut single that is a pretty auspicious start for the duo. The first seconds are somewhat low-key, before it brings in its catchy flavour, breezy guitar lines, and the alt-rock pair - who wear their influences, such as Hockey Dad, DZ Deathrays and Nirvana, on their sleeve - really get going.

AIRLINE FOOD - FIND YOURSELF TONIGHT

The Perth indie pop four-piece dropped their debut single 'Axe Murderer' earlier this year, and now return with its follow-up. Co-produced by the band with Broderick Madden-Scott, it takes 80s-effected synths and psychedelic guitars, which are mixed with woozy, echoing vocals and muffled drums.

THE EMPTY THREATS - SANITY RUSSEL

The Adelaide indie rock quintet's latest single, after 'Stubborness' from earlier in the year taken from their 'Ablutions' debut EP. Produced by the band's guitarist Matt Schultz, and released last week, the track fills out there and a half minutes with a tough array of punchy vocals, propulsive guitar riffs and frantic percussion.
