The Murder Capital debut album track 'Don't Cling To Life' via visuals

Words: Linn Branson

A staple of the Dublin post-punk band's live set, and featuring on their much anticipated debut album, 'When I Have Fears', out August 16, The Murder Capital have debuted 'Don't Cling To Life.

Premiered on Steve Lamacq's BBC 6 Music show earlier today (July 9) - who will also be featuring a live session with the band next month - the track is accompanied by the visuals - directed by Ethan Barrett and Tom Gullam , who both produced the band's 'Green & Blue' video - below.

The emotive and raw 'Don’t Cling To Life' was written around the time of the death of one of the band's mothers. "Even through everything that was going on we didn’t want to write a sad song, we wanted to write a song you could dance to," vocalist James McGovern has said. "Feeling grief and wanting to dance through it, and feeling the rawness and emptiness of our own grief, because any relationship that involves love is so specific to you.”

With all your chances gone awry
To be collected by your palms.
If I had only stood aside,
With dour sediment in hand.
Forego delusion to disarm,
Then dance around your lonely cave.
In my relentless state of charm,
Let’s stay enclosed for all our days.

And as it feigns a deadly grip,
The world collapses ‘round my room.
The water floats the floors adrift,
Your eyes demand the darkest blue. With hands held tight it goes and goes, The light that once shone on the pale. Our steady hands return to stone,
Let’s stay enclosed for all our days. Failing this let’s dance and cry,
So we remember why we die.
Don’t cling to life,
There’s nothing on the other side.
