Glasgow-based trio Dogtooth may all yet still to reach the age of 20, but have already clocked up a healthy array of gigs and releases. Their polished indie rock style has been described as The Killers with a Scottish accent. The band have just dropped their new AA-side single, 'What For' / 'Away'. The band are currently writing their debut album.
Who are you?
My name is John Hewitson, I play lead guitar and vocals in Dogtooth, alongside Craig Morrison on bass and Robert (Boab) Lang on drums and backing vocals.
Tell us something about yourself and how you came to be where you are today.
A chance meeting between myself and Craig when we were just 11 and 12 years old in 2013 in Millport was the beginning of Dogtooth. We met Robert about 8 months later when he helped us during a practise afternoon at Loud and Proud in Renfrew. He was meant to be with us for only that day and he’s still here 6 years later! Initially like most bands we built up a set list of covers by our favourite bands at the time. The likes of The Jam, The Stone Roses, The Clash, Oasis, Libertines, Catfish and The Bottlemen etc. were included and we were gigging most weekends. We gradually introduced our own material into our sets and have now a full set of ever growing originals! Although based in Glasgow we have performed all over the UK.
Give us an idea of your musical style and influences.
Our musical style is indie/alternative taken from a wide range of musical influences, including the bands we used to cover and the modern bands we listen to and admire today.
Explain the production and writing process behind your songs.
All three of us contribute with the writing process. When one of us comes up with an idea we put it to the others and bounce it around a bit until it fits with us all. We have recorded all of our tracks thus far with Bruce Rintoul of 45 A-Side Recordings.
Tell us a little about your new single
The new single is a double A-side. The first track, 'What For' is quite dance influenced and you can also hear that we are experimenting with digital backing tracks and trying to do something different. Both songs are about the torture of romance, but two very different stories.
Can we catch up with you at any forthcoming live shows?
Of course! A few events coming up. The first one is Live@Troon which for the first time is having and under 18s Festival, we headline on Sunday 18th August. Shortly after that we headline for Resonate in the Amsterdam Bar in Glasgow on Friday 23rd. Edinburgh at Stramash on 30th and Beith Beer Festival on 31st! Looking forward to them all!
How's the rest of the year looking, plans-wise?
Obviously writing and recording is important to us. We plan to release a few more singles this year and play as many live gigs as possible - playing live is what we love best!

All of our tracks are available on Spotify, iTunes and all online platforms. We have limited 7” vinyl of our newly released AA-side available to purchase from our Facebook shop and at any live performances. Our debut EP 'Breakthrough' is also available to purchase in any UK HMV store on 10” vinyl or CD format.
