Little Indie's Best of 2019 Part 2

After another year of hits and highs, we asked some of our writers to take a look back at what rocked their 2019.


Today, Richard Cobb shares some of the tracks that caught his ear in the last 12 months.


Déyyess - No Man’s Land

Apple Music threw this unexpected pop delight at me a few months ago and it’s been a daily listen ever since. Must confess I don’t really know a great deal about the London-based artist as she’s fairly new on the scene this year. One thing I do know is that with an enchanting voice like hers, Déyyess won’t stay under the radar for much longer.




Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds - Galleon Ship

It’s hard to shine a torch on just one track from this year's acclaimed heart stomper of an album, 'Ghosteen', but this one in particular stays with me. The beauty is in the simplicity. Its raw romanticism and devastatingly beautiful synth/gentle piano accompaniment float without waves alongside Cave’s familiar gentle storytelling. I’ve been chopping onions, honest!




Lucia & The Best Boys - Good Girls Do Bad Things

The organiser of Glasgow’s TRNSMT festival slipped on his own banana skin with the ‘more women need to pick up guitars to get on festival lineups’ remark last month. Sorry to piss on his Lynx Africa fuelled bonfire, but he couldn’t have been more wide of the mark and should have been looking much closer to home. He could have spared himself the blushes for his deeply flawed assessment and booked Lucia & The Best Boys to headline because next year they’ll be huge.




Walt Disco - Past Tense

Without doubt my band of the year and the most remarkably improved live band I’ve ever had the pleasure of revisiting. Sheer graft and a wonderfully theatrical live show has put Walt Disco on the map in 2019. With ‘My Pop Sensibilities’ and ‘Strange To Know Nothing’ all strong contenders for my top 5, ‘Past Tense’ just shades it with its sublime production and heart on sleeve lyrics. Check out the video too, it’s a tear-jerker but a beautiful ode to a loved one.




The Ninth Wave - This Broken Design

The perfect dessert topping off the three course meal from Glasgow, I couldn’t leave these guys off a songs of the year list. A stand out opener from the band’s live shows and the perfect atmospheric opening to their stunning debut album ‘Infancy’. Watch the song come alive at Maida Vale earlier this year.
