Little Indie's Best of 2019 Part 3
After another year of hits and highs, we asked some of our writers to take a look back at what rocked their 2019.
Linn Branson views 5 of her favourite acts that Scotland has produced over the last 12 months.
VLURE
We have said elsewhere how and where Little Indie first came across this band from Glasgow, and since May they have obviously been working hard on honing style (ie guitarist Niall Goldie looking hot to trot now he's dropped the moustache! and frontman Hamish Hutcheson showing equal sartorial savvy in his new suit as he does barechested!) and content, and have ended 2019 with 'Desire', which is about as good a calling card as can be dropped. Supreme.
CASUAL DRAG
The Edinburgh garage-rock three-piece popped up in early summer, blowing is all away with 'Bleach Head'; later in the year returning with a new slice of thumping rock n roll, 'Isolation Island. Casual Drag, like VLURE above, were a band on first hearing you immediately thought "Wow! Yeah! Fuck, I like this!"
WALT DISCO
Another Little Indie darling band, who set the Showcasing Scotland stage at The Great Escape alive back in May, and have continued to stamp their Glaswegian mark with their 80s new wave meets glam-post-punk. The cinematic 'Past Tense' saw James Potter effect vocal gymnastics, soaring and weaving around a Blue Nile-esque groove, managing to sound both grand and vulnerable at the same time.
THE DUNTS
The cheeky Glasgow punks in their Doc Martens and energetic live set won our hearts back in the early summer at Camden Rocks Festival, and have continued their steady rise up the Celtic ladder ever since.they displayed sartorial savvy coupled with energetic vibes, we love them even more. A powerhouse drummer in Kyle McGhee who provides the underpinning with his ferocious drums, behind driving defiant guitars, bouncing melodies, and their ‘council-punk’ sensibilities delivered by Rab Smith's vocals.
ECHO MACHINE
Dundee's new-wave poppers Echo Machine, was how it reminded me of fellow Scots Walt Disco above, with a frisson of Glasgow's (now demised) WHITE. The big, bruising, belter of a song 'Automatic' released back in July, has both a retro 80s feel to it in its love of a good synth line and dancefloor disco groove, but also manages to sound contemporary at the same time.
