Live Review :: Clairo :: O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, London - Dec 2 2019

Live

Clairo

O2 Shepherd's Bush Empire, London

December 2 2019

Words: Sam Geary

After dropping her debut album 'Immunity' earlier this year, Claire Cottrill, better known simply as Clairo, the 21-year-old American bedroom-pop singer-songwriter from Massachusetts, is in London for the second night of her UK tour.

There's a massive rousing greeting as she and her three-member band step onto the theatre stage. She starts off lending her whispery vocals to ‘Alewife’, followed by 'Impossible', ‘Softly’, the song about the first bloom of love ("Is it alright to feel this way so early?"), and ‘Flaming Hot Cheetos’. There's little crowd interaction, although she does frequently thank the crowd for their welcome in between songs and guitar-playing. ‘North’, ‘Bags’, and ‘Sofia’ follow consecutively at midpoint, with an enthusiastic crowd in tune with the words as they keep pace throughout.

The 17-song set, which includes a new song as well as a three-song encore, finishes on ‘Pretty Girl’ - for which a screen set up behind her on stage runs the song's video encourages fans to go wild on its chorus, and her Mura Masa cover, 'I Don't Think I Can Do This Again', which excites the floor to ride on its bouncing energy until the very last note has died away.
