Track Of The Day :: Candy - Clean

Words: Sam Geary

Former Amyl and the Sniffers member Calum Newton, who now goes out under his own solo moniker of Candy comes 'Clean' on his self-produced latest single.

Mixed by LA-based producer Matt Neighbour (The Avalanches, Sky Ferreira), the bright alt-pop track, released last week, is taken from the Melbourne artist's third album (due out later this year), and was written about feeling defeated during the bushfires earlier in the year and even with the focus shifted to current circumstances around the pandemic, lyrically it feels very relevant.

"'Clean’ stems from my scared and defeatist mindset," he says. "I think as individuals we need to take action and try our best, however it’s hard not to feel like whatever you do is in vain as we're slowly being strangled by the lack of empathy from these huge corporations purely focused on their pockets. With the recent events of this pandemic, I find this song remains pertinent to the times and maybe you'll find some solace or enjoyment from it. Who knows?"
