With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.
SAMAS - NINA
Sydney-based SAMAS unveils his debut single here. Traversing an alt-rock path, 'Nina' could almost have come from a 90s Britpop band, with a nostalgic bent, rich guitars, nice vocals, plus backing from Tuppaware Party’s Bryce Hearnden and Tom Smithson of Kava Kings.
MARK CROTTI - CHATTERBOX
Taken from his self-titled debut EP released at the end of June, Sydney multi-instrumentalist Mark Crotti exudes a warmth and authenticity in his simple and honest indie-folk acoustic arrangements. Gentle guitar plucking lends a melancholic air, as Crotti's breathy vocal tone is soothingly pleasurable.
NEIGHBOURHOOD VOID - RECOVERY
Produced by Dylan Adams, the Sydney trio - Mikey, Gio and Zac - produce another sterling offering after February’s ‘Catatonic Youth’. Big guitar riffs complement what they describe as "gutter rock", with psych-tinged vocals. We like.
HANNI - IF ALL I EVER DID
HANNI, aka 18-year-old Brisbane singer/songwriter Hannah Schloman, released her debut single 'Wired' last July, followed by second single 'Crazy', now returns with this third alt-pop number, out on July 9. The four-minute-plus 'If All I Ever Did' fields acoustic elements with bright, emotive vocals, while the lyrical introspection sung with feeling, details easy it is to lose yourself when following others, and the importance of remaining grounded. A bit of an earworm, as the chorus is one that remains in the head.
LOVE LEVEL - LOVE LEVEL
Produced by Callum McDonald and Dimitrios Mois, and mixed by Golden Vessel, Gold Coast duo Love Level - Aimee Van der Kruik and Juliana Ebert - unveil this eponymous debut single of woozy R&B inflected beats and lush vocals. The track, they say, was inspired by an inebriated friend on a night out saying he’d had just enough to drink to be on his “love level." “We also played on the idea of the song being interpreted from a romantic perspective - the vulnerability and overwhelming emotions that come with any new relationship."
LIME CORDIALE - SCREW LOOSEz
Sydney's Lime Cordiale, brothers Oli and Louis Leimbach, share this new sludgey, ska vibe track and video ahead of their upcoming album, '14 Steps To A Better You', out this Friday, July 10. Referencing Salvador Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory painting and 70s psychedelics, the upbeat, fun tune evolved, they say, as “we were laughing throughout the whole writing process.”
