Best new tracks Down Under #30

With the vibrant indie music scene in Australia and New Zealand constantly outshining much of the output from their British and American cousins, Little Indie picks our weekly bunch of some of the best new tracks on offer.

SHORES - SHE GETS WHAT SHE WANTS

Brisbane band SHORES deliver a strong bass-driven new single 'She Gets What She Wants'. Strong vocals and a powering guitar solo, it's a three snd a half minute rock anthem “It was written," say the band, "from the perspective of someone who finds themselves unable to resist a person who might not be good for them - a universally relatable feeling. It’s a bit more of a slow burner than most of our other music, but still has a punky edge.”

SAM CULLEN - LOVE LIES

Wellington, NZ-based songwriter and pop rock artist Sam Cullen steps up with 'Love Lies', the lush first single from his forthcoming debut EP. Over a pumping beat and gritty guitars, “the subject matter comes through in the form of a rough break up, however, having observed so many situations where the ‘I’m fine’ attitude replaced emotion is what really got to me when writing the song.”

NOAH DILLON - SUNBURNT IN JULY

Fremantle's Noah Dillon follows his 'Everything Melts' EP with 'Sunburnt in July'. Catchy indie-pop with lyricism exploring the depths of mental health. "The song lyrically looks at these places and pressures in my mind and throughout the video are represented through the anonymity of the balaclava people. It is also representative of how society can often fail to help people through these internal battles, instead capitalising on the misfortune of others shown by the grandma laughing manically at the expense of this person (me) having the worst day ever. Overall I hope it’s a weird and wild adventure into the soundscape and lyrical meaning behind the song."

FLOWERMARKET - COME WHAT MAY

Canberra high school teen indie-rock four-piece popped out with their debut single 'Can't Stop' back in February. Now after recording their self-titled debut EP in isolation during the Covid-19 lockdown, take a listen to new track from it, 'Come What May'. Ed York's vocals are studied, the lyrics interesting, and there's a not half-bad guitar solo in here towards the close of the four-minute number that belies their relatively tender age.

TRANSISTOR - NOTHING NEW

A band we have been impressed with since 2018's 'All You Remember', and their following fuzzy 'Soft Burning Silver' EP, Wellington, NZ trio Transistor share 'Nothing New', the first taste of a debut album in progress. A bruising slice of vigorous, propulsive psych, with a touch of the band's "newfound love for synthesisers".

ALI ADRIANO - MY HAND

An exquisite offering from Melbourne-based producer Ali Adriano on her debut single. Written, recorded, and produced during lockdown, as a trained filmmaker, Adriano's track is both as cinematic and captivating as the accompanying visuals. The haunting' My Hand' is a glacial sonic palette with gossamer fine melodies and spine-tingling vocals that linger in the senses.
