One To Watch :: Curb

Birmingham, the city that just can't seem to stop throwing up one after another new band, seems it could have struck gold yet again with the latest to emerge - Curb.

Now it may be a little presumptuous of us to go hailing this four-piece as the new big buzz band, given they have just one track online - 'How Are You Now?' - and that only a demo, and so far, gig-wise, just made their live debut last night in their hometown. But if our ears are correct, and if names are built on enthusiastic reports, word out of Brum is that this is a hot one.

Still riding high from their raptuous reception at the Actress & Bishop, we caught bass player Lee for a few quick words.

What's the background to the band, Lee, as you seem to have emerged out for nowhere to this sudden acclaim?

We formed as this four-piece three months ago. I had originally met Tom (vocals) in January to discuss writing songs together. Then we set to finding the right people to form a band with and that all came together very suddenly three months ago.

Are there any particular musical influences driving the band?

We all listen to a wide range of music - and all of it influences us in different ways, big or small.

And as for your own particular sound, how would you describe that?

We'll leave that for people to decide themselves! I'm sure something will get coined!

'Curb' as a band name - where did that come from?

I was standing outside Robannas [a studio in Birmingham's Gun Quarter] a few months ago at the time when we were still trying different musicians out. I thought we needed a band name that was a one word name, like Oasis or Nirvana - two of the biggest bands of all time. Curb was the first thing that came into my head. We used the verb spelling of it (meaning 'to check/restrain') as the letter K annoys me!

Is this the first band for all of you?

No, we've all had experience in different bands in the past. Sam played in metal bands and hardcore punk bands, I've played in hard rock and funk rock bands, Tom played folk music and Joe had played in a new wave band and a few covers bands.

So far we just have the one demo online from you, what is planned for the immediate future, ie are you releasing this or bringing out an EP?

Plans right now are to play shows and continue writing songs. We haven't committed to recording an EP yet. We definitely want to concentrate on getting a few more gigs under our belt first.

Your first gig last night, how much pressure did you feel under? From the little I have heard, you seemed to make quite a big impression!

We felt a bit of pressure, yeah. I think because the response to our demo has been so positive, a lot of people had turned up wanting to know if we had more to offer! We knew we were gonna smash it though, and afterwards we got a lot of positive feedback from everyone that attended, so it was all groovy.

Any more live ones currently pencilled in the diary?

We're playing at the Fixxion Warehouse in Wolverhampton on 29th August, supporting Bad Apes. We are in talks right now on booking more gigs in the near future - which is most excellent!

So, there you have it. A new band that looks like it could be sparking a light in the months to come. Check out below the infectiously listenable 'How Are You Now?' and see for yourself.

Curb are: Tom O'Ryan (vocals/guitar), Joe Booth (guitar), Lee Booker (bass), Sam Hunt (drums).
