October will see the release of debut single ‘Magpie’ courtesy of singer-songwriter Khushi. A bright future has already been pathed for this newcomer, with support slots for Laura Mvula and Foxes ticked off the list and backing from XFM’s John Kennedy. .
Like many new artists, Khushi has been subject to some clumsy comparisons to the likes of Alt-J, Bon Iver and The National and no doubt there is hints of the three throughout the track however Khushi brings his own unique and refreshing take on the over-saturated ‘singer-songwriter’ market we’re currently at the mercy of.
‘Magpie’ is a delicate exploration through carefully put-together instrumentation that builds in a gloriously subtle manner supported by a tortured and, at times, strained vocal delivery. It’s refreshing to hear an artist that hasn’t been sucked into the temptations of the ever popular electronic indie scene which could have so easily been the case with ‘Magpie’, instead there is a highly organic feel to the track in the way of production and structure.
B-side ‘Never Never’ plays its part in showcasing Khushi’s credentials. On par with the main release, it shows off not only the ability to construct a multi-layered composition that glides between verse and chorus seamlessly, but also a compelling vocal style and an instantly recognisable tone.
‘Magpie’ is sure to grab the attention of many critics and. more importantly, new fans that can pass on the gospel of Khushi and the majesty of his haunting indie pop.
