Introducing :: Blossoms
Introducing: Blossoms
Words: Leanne Crowley
Having surfaced last year and made their entrance with the 60s retro feel of 'Blow', Manchester's Blossoms continue their ride on the psych revival which is sweeping the nation. But unlike many of the acts around who like the idea of being a psych band, but don't really know what to do about it, this five-piece outfit have all the elements in one neat little bundle.
The swirling and sensual vocals of Tom Ogden taunt over the haunting organ melodies of Myles Kellock. Add into the mix Zombies style drumming from Joe Donovan, ragged guitar melodies from Josh Dewhurst and a dash of bass from Charlie Salt and the effect is really quite wonderful.
The announcement of a single ahead of some live shows has the scene in a stir. Released on Sonic Bloom Records in January, ‘You Pulled A Gun on Me' is everything that psych fans want right now with none of the nonsense. The quirky guitar intro and off-note keys are in the traditional psych style whilst adding a modern swish with the layering of sound and the occasional cowbell. The swirling vocals of Tom are where psych and pop meet seamlessly. The minor bridges, twinkling intersects and the plucked guitar sound effect intertwine to create an overall polished effect, with the final vocal leaving a haunting afterglow. Keep this band on your radar.
With several gigs already under their belt in 2014 (including London, Paris and Brussels), next lined up are February 22 at Night & Day Café, Manchester; April 11 at Ruby Lounge, Manchester, and the following night at London's Queen of Hoxton.
Blossoms are: Tom Ogden (vocals and guitar), Charlie Salt (bass & backing vocals), Josh Dewhurst (lead guitar), Joe Donovan (drums) & Myles Kellock (keys)
