Saturday After Party DJ - So Tough! So Cute!
Featuring a liberal smattering of indie-pop sugaryness from both the label's own roster and more - with some bands crossing the pond in order to grace one of the many venues playing host to the event over the weekend. Here's a handful of our picks of who to be sure to catch.
NIGHT FLOWERS
Irresistible dream-pop in the vain of The Pains of Being Pure At Heart, London-based quartet Night Flowers are making the kind of hazy laid back indie that you can expect to soundtrack a warm summer evening. Restrained vocals give tracks such as 'Ember' an almost-dated transatlantic feel, like some of the best 90s indie-pop.
Check out: 'Embers', 'North'.
KID CANAVERAL
Scotland's Kid Canaveral could almost be considered old hats on the indie-pop circuit. Formed in 2004, the band have released a string of releases on both their own label and Lost Map Records, culminating in their critically acclaimed 2010 debut 'Shouting at Wildlife', a record full of lush melodies and pop sensibilities that first found their place on an Odd Box line up way back in 2009.
Check out: 'You Only Went Out to Get Drunk Last Night'.
GRUBS
Punk pop thrash from three-piece that comprise members of the currently lauded Joanna Gruesome and Trust Fund (Owen, Roxy, Jake). Still as yet to play their live debut (they do so on April 13).
Check out: 'Dec 15th'.
SOCK PUPPETS
Coming over from Denmark, Sock Puppets describe themselves as “a heady mix of 60s girl groups and 70s punk rockers. Think the Ramones gate crashing the best ever slumber party”. Vocal harmonies combined with fuzzy garage rock guitars in a juxtaposition that shouldn't work, but does.
Check out: 'Hey Honey'.
THE SPOOK SCHOOL
The second band from Scotland on the bill, Edinburgh's The Spook School are making lo-fi indie pop, with nostalgia and guitar jangles aplenty. Signed to Fortuna POP! alongside notable names such as The Pipettes, as well as up-and-comers like Joanna Gruesome, you can imagine the kind of sugary pop we're talking about.
Check out: 'I'll Be Honest'.
CHORUSGIRL
Homegrown “jangle 'n' roll”, baby - indie-pop with bucket loads of 60s influence. With only two tracks available online, and having only played their first gig a matter of weeks ago, Chorusgirl are somewhat of a mystery to most of us. Full of pop hooks and emotive lyricism though, you can be sure they'll fit right in on the bill.
Check out: 'Oh, To Be A Defector', 'Alone'.
HEATHERS
Not to be confused with the Irish band of the same name, L.A's Heathers are making contemporary poppy miserbilia, flecked with a lo-fi appreciation of 80s indie wrapped up in an art-punk veneer, making Heathers one of the most exciting bands playing across the weekend.
Check out: 'Teenage Clothes'.
