Ones To Watch :: The Article
Their Facebook post of September 2012 was something of a clue: "Played a great gig at Fibbers tonight, had fun. Sadly had to leave early, school in the morning." And for the, what was then a three-piece band (fourth member Jacob having only joined recently) formed in the February of the same year, this was no throw-away line - they really did have school the next day, being at that time aged around just 14 years old.
The Article, who hail from York, have not seemed to waste any time, and in less than two years have produced an EP, recorded their just released new single 'Robbers', played gigs at such prestigious venues as 02 Academy in Sheffield, and local York venues Fibbers and The Duchess, opened for names like The 1975, Arrows Of Love and Casual Sex, set up their own label, Office Records - and all while only now barely 15 and 16, and still at grammar school studying for GCSEs this summer.
"Myself and Robert started making music together in 2011. Since then it has grown and grown," says Cameron Etherton, who also "manages the business side of the band." After Matthew Orr joined in March 2012, "we started gigging and writing our own songs. Jacob joined last month so is the newest member, replacing Matt on bass and putting Matt on synth as our sound was changing and we needed a new member to perform live."
Their six- track debut EP 'Isolation' was released in January last year, together with first single 'Ignite The Flame'. Their latest work is a double A-side single 'Robbers'/'Love Is Wrong' which came out on Friday. From the catchy drift of ‘Robbers’, to the synth overlaid ‘Love Is Wrong’ (with the stirring vocals of Beth Stevens), The Article combine a mix of synthpop and post-punk. They have also previously covered 'Sex' by The 1975, along with including in their live set Joy Division's 'Love Will Tear Us Apart'.
Definitely a band to keep on your radar. Maybe Simon Cowell should as well.
The Article play a single launch show on April 10 at The Basement, York.
The Article are: Robert Fisher (vocals, guitar), Matt Orr (synth), Cameron Etherton (drums), Jacob Burtenshaw (bass).
