Track Of The Day :: Ajimal - Nothing Touches Me
It is perhaps a touch ironic that the opening line to this, the latest release from Newcastle-based Ajimal, is "They don't make them like they used to" - words that at times one could easily equate to much of today's musical output, especially when you come upon such well-crafted compositions as turned out by Fran O'Hanlon that leaves a lot of similar ilk paling into insignificance.
The singer/songwriter (and recently qualified doctor of medicine) has produced a song, that is, according to the writer, about the idea of 'self' and the inability to imagine anything outside one's own sphere of existence. It's about fearlessness and inability to imagine death. It looks at repetition; the fact that everything that we do, or that future generations do, has arguably been done before - how to come to terms with this.
Don't be put off if that all sounds rather too weighty to get a handle on, for the song itself is a stunning piece of minimalist piano and vocal, that takes its time drawing you in before it blossoms out into something quite stirringly haunting.
‘Nothing Touches Me’ is released on December 1 via North East based artist collective and label Mono as part of a split 12’ release with fellow North East based act Tessera Skies.
Mono will be hosting a launch party for the single at Ernest, Newcastle on November 29 and Ajimal will be playing a free show for Communion on October 21 at The Islington, London in support of the release.
