Introducing :: Del Sur

Words: Linn Branson

Surf trop-pop with a Caribbean twist from young Philadelphia outfit Del Sur.

Drawing comparisons to the likes of Ducktails, Vampire Weekend, and Beach Fossils, the band released their debut six-track EP 'H.A.G.S' in February, although featuring just vocalist Michael Collier and bassist Connor Watts. Now expanded to a full four-piece band (all aged 18/19), Del Sur are set to put out 'Cape Coast' alongside 'Aubrey Plaza' on a self-released split album with Frontyards, Tribute, Snack Team and Dream League Soccer. Out on June 30 via Rough Beast, the same time as it will be in released as an A/B digital single.

"I originally wrote the chords for this ['Cape Coast'] in June of 2013 with my friend Jaime Jackson-Block," explains Collier. 'We sat on the song for a while, and the next June, Connor wrote and recorded a bassline. Once Del Sur started playing live more, Phil and Liam added parts to the song and that is the way we decided to record it. This is the first time all four of us have recorded together and it’s also the first Del Sur song to feature live drumming."

The track is guaranteed to put you in the calypso spirit, full of jangly, vibrant guitars, layered with that zesty skippering drum beat that makes you want to get up and dancing.

Catch Del Sur next live at The Nest in Philadelphia on June 7.

Del Sur are: Michael Collier - vocals / guitar, Phil Burch - guitar, Connor Watts - bass, Liam Sullivan - drums
