Introducing :: Sykoya

Words: Ellie Ward

New London electronic-dreampop outfit Sykoya may share similarities with the likes of London Grammar, via the haunting vocals of Anna Marcella and their delicately constructed electronic synth sound, and if their debut EP 'Here' - set for release early next year after seemingly now having been taken down online - is anything to go by, Sykoya could very soon see themselves enjoying the same kind of acclaim.

Fronted by American Anna Marcella - formerly of Fluent In Grey who emerged last year with single 'Lost' - Sykoya derive influence from artists such as The Cure, Portishead, Massive Attack and Daughter.

As an EP taster, Sykoya have released debut track ‘Closer’. Filling a dark electronic soundscape, it opens on a eerie beat against Marcella's breathy vocal, 'marching' at a steady pace on synth and electronic drums. Personally, I prefer the EP title track, but it looks like that will not be heard again now - other than live - until 2016.

Sykoya play two upcoming London dates: Surya on October 22 and Cafe 1001 on November 3.

Sykoya are: Anna Marcella (Lead Vocals/Keys), Alejandro Bonatto (Synth), Eduardo Leal (Bass/Backing Vocals), Curtis ElVidge (Drums).
